John Newton, um inglês marinheiro, mercador de escravos, após passar por uma tempestade, certifica-se de que somente e graça de Deus poderia livrá-lo daquela situação. Então, movido pelo acontecimento e pela leitura do livro Imitação de Cristo, de Tomás de Kempis, abandonou o tráfico de escravos, tornou-se cristão e compôs um dos hinos mais conhecidos no mundo gospel: Amazing Grace, em 1779.
